Switchyard Park - Cleveland, TN Brownfield Redevelopment

Cleveland TN, is expected to grow by more than 30,000 people within the next 20 years (almost doubling in size) and was looking to remediate/redevelop a brownfield site that was located along an industrial corridor that has gone underutilized for many years.  The Whirlpool factory that was once a mainstay for the economy has been all but abandoned and the rail yard now acts as a physical barrier to the Blythe Oldfield community from downtown Cleveland located directly north of the site.

These issues provide a great opportunity to remediate and enhance the community through renewed interest in economic development, reduced flood risks, and new transit opportunities that connect Blythe Oldfield with Cleveland and Cleveland with the Piedmont Atlantic Megaregion.

The linear park utilizes flyovers to reconnect the fragmented pieces of Cleveland, acting as a green spine that allows greater accessibility to the pedestrian.  In focusing on the rail yard as an "urban spectacle", the industrial heritage of the site is not only represented, but celebrated as the centerpiece of the city's future growth.

Daily activities of the rail become part of the park and the community itself, the movement of people and the marshaling of cars is seen through a different perspective and the sculptural form of the tracks are echoed in the design, integrating into the existing infrastructure of the community.
